The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that six of ten individuals with a substance use disorder meet criteria for another mental illness diagnosis. These co-occurring disorders present significant challenges for both chemical dependency and mental health practitioners across levels of treatment intensity.

To answer these challenges, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has emerged as a highly teachable and applicable approach for people with complex co-morbidities. This workbook outlines the acceptance-based philosophies of DBT with straight-forward guidelines for implementing them in Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) settings along with comprehensive explanations of DBT skills tailored for those with dual disorders. Includes reproducible handouts.

REVIEWS

Pederson provides a practical model for simultaneous treatment of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Clinicians working with dually diagnosed clients will appreciate the thoughtful integration of the most effective contemporary treatment models used in both psychiatric and substance treatment.
~Bari Platter, MS, RN, CNF, author of Integrating Dialectical Behavior Therapy with the Twelve Steps

Clinicians are often asking how to treat both mental health and substance use problems together. This book is the answer. It provides well proven strategies to deal with substance use problems head on by utilizing one of the best evidence based strategies for this - DBT.
~Cathy Moonshine, Ph.D., MSCP, MAC, CADC III, author of Acquiring Competency and Achieving Proficiency with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Volumes I & II)

Pederson's new manual blends DBT with traditional chemical dependency treatment in a respectful and cogent manner - making it easy to apply this treatment in real world settings. It truly is a resource that practitioners will use daily in their treatment of patients with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.
~Wade Kuehl, MSW, LISW, Clinical Director - Siouxland Mental Health Center

"I purchased this book after attending Dr. Pederson's DBT conference and have been using it regularly since returning to my work at a substance abuse treatment center. He seamlessly blends in recovery language with all the traditional DBT skills. It is very clear, user friendly, easily understood by both clinicians and clients. It is full of worksheets and handouts, ready to use individually or with groups. They look clean and modern (graphics and fonts) with descriptions and examples built in; other DBT handouts have felt convoluted or outdated compared to this book. The book provides guidance and direction for structuring your program which is super helpful. My work is primarily abstinence based recovery and this book fits clinically within that framework but would also work just as well with a harm reduction approach. It is easily adaptable and I find that the worksheets and handouts from this book can be used outside of dual-diagnosis settings. I am running a general DBT program in private practice that is not for dual diagnosis, and I frequently choose the worksheets and handouts from this book over other traditional DBT texts. As a clinician, I want tools and information that I can immediately apply in my practice and this book is it! Its a great addition if you are already using DBT and is also a great first place to start if you are new to DBT. I am very pleased with this book and have gotten positive feedback from clients and colleagues on its content."

  • Great incorporation of good substance use disorder treatment and DBT -- We have begun using it at Resource Connect in Baltimore
  • Nice overview, some good worksheets, pretty basic workbook.
  • This will be very helpful in my work.
  • Great, usable manual. I have Dr. Pederson's other manual, and this one does not disappoint either. Excellent for dual diagnosis and is ideal for clients with complicated presentations. Like his other manual, it is a hit-the-ground running manual that requires no changes for full usable implementation. His handouts are not complicated, unlike most of the other manuals out there. Great resource and I highly recommend it.

    Signed, Dr. S.B.
  • Much too advanced for my clientele of chronically mentally ill patients. Have used this very little.
