Going into a hospital for any reason can be a very stressful and sometimes frightening experience. Not only do patients have to deal with the illness or injury that brought them there, but they also have to face a tremendous variety of complex, unusual and sometimes downright strange machinery that will be used in the course of their treatment.

Doctors and nurses are often very busy and may not have the time to explain all the equipment that might be seen in a hospital visit. Patients and families, on the other hand, sometimes seem to have too much time to think about such things.

Not everyone is interested in the technology they might see in a hospital, but many patients are curious about the machines. The aim of this book is to take some of the mystery out of the equipment they will see, and hopefully enable patients to feel a little more comfortable and a little more involved in their own care.

Families and visitors of patients often feel just as bewildered as the patients themselves. They look at all the tubes and wires connecting their loved one to machines that beep and whirr and have all sorts of knobs and buttons and colorful displays, and they may not know what it all means.

A very wide variety of technological devices are used in the course of treating patients in hospitals. This variety is increasing, and the individual devices are often becoming more complex as well. This book gives a clear and concise description of the principle of operation of each device as well as an outline of the way it is used, so that readers can understand both how and why it is being used in hospital care.

Appendices include detailed descriptions of ECGs and arrhythmias, surgery and anesthesia, normal values, and anatomical illustrations.

"As a person who has had several medical procedures, most recently cataract surgery, I found this book was very good at putting my mind at ease regarding the sometimes scary hospital world. While some people prefer to stay in denial when they are about to undergo surgery or diagnostic tests, I do not. I like to know as much as possible what is about to be "done to me" and why.
The book is well-written and easy to understand. I like the way it is set up so you can "skip around" and read the parts that interest you."

  • As a person who has had several medical procedures, most recently cataract surgery, I found this book was very good at putting my mind at ease regarding the sometimes scary hospital world. While some people prefer to stay in denial when they are about to undergo surgery or diagnostic tests, I do not. I like to know as much as possible what is about to be "done to me" and why.
The book is well-written and easy to understand. I like the way it is set up so you can "skip around" and read the parts that interest you.
  • If you were a love one will spend time in healthcare facilities, this is the most concise and thorough guide you could ever find!
  • An informative and easy to read book for anyone curious about the equipment you encounter in a hospital/medical setting and what it all means. The book is well written for patients and their families who are interested in what the equipment does and why it's being used. I was fairly recently hospitalized for surgery, and found the book to be helpful before I went in for the procedure as I wanted to know what was going to happen during my knee replacement surgery and what kinds of things I would see in the hospital. I like that the book does not require reading from cover-to-cover, but that it's set up so that you can easily find the info which pertains to your specific needs at any time. A very handy reference book to have around for past, current, and future medical experiences. It helps to take some of the intimidation out of hospital and medical experiences.
  • I was given this book when I was going to the hospital for surgery recently and it was good when I wanted to find out about the hospital machines and equipment that I met there. I have only read the parts of the book that applied to me during my hospital stay, and the parts where I saw familiar looking pictures but I have friends and an aging family members who have questions about their own hospital experiences and I am sure the information will be interesting for them too. Some of those machines are intimidating. Have you seen a CT scanner? And some machines you just wonder about as the nurses use them during your stay there. The book is informative and easy to read and the pictures were interesting. It's a good resource for people who want to know about the medical machines and what they do.
  • I really liked that I could jump around throughout the book and find the sections that were applicable to me, or where I was curious about something in specific. Very straightforward - there's no diagnosing, just "This is what these are, this is what they do, here's the information that will help you understand why it's there." Takes some of the scary-ness out of the jargon.
