PDF The Spirit of Intimacy Ancient African Teachings in the Ways of Relationships Sobonfu Some 9780688175795 Books

A renowned, respected teacher and mentor to thousands, Sobonfu Somi is one of the first and foremost voices of African spirituality to come to the West.
Somi was born in Dano, Burkina Faso, a remote West African village with a population of about two hundred people. Dano has preserved the old ways of African village life, with family structures, spiritual practices, and methods of living that have been in place for more than ten thousand years. In The Spirit of Intimacy, Somi distills the ancient teachings and wisdom of her native village to give insight into the nature of intimate relationships.
Somi generously applies the subtle knowledge from her West African culture to this one. Simply and beautifully, she reveals the role of spirit in every marriage, friendship, relationship, and community. She shares ancient ways to make our intimate lives more fulfilling and secure and offers powerful insights into the "illusion of romance," divorce, and loss. Her important and fascinating lessons from the heart include the sacred meaning of pleasure, preparing a ritual space for intimacy, and the connection between sex and spirituality. Her ideas are intuitively persuasive, provocative, and healing--and supported by sound practical advice, along with specific rituals and ceremonies based on those used for thousands of years.
With this book, the spiritual insights of indigenous Africa take their place alongside those of native America, ancient Europe, and Asia as important influences on Western readers.

- Last night I finished "The Spirit of Intimacy Ancient African Teachings in the Ways of Relationships" by Sobonfu Somé. I was turned onto it by an article Cazembe Abena had written. I'm still having some mixed feelings, as J do with most hyper-gendered and one standardized relationship style approaches... but a tidbit near the end way interesting.
Amongst the Dagara people of Burkina Faso, people who are not called to be in marriage (male/female), ones folks in the West may call gay, lesbian, and/or perhaps trans, are called Gatekeepers. They do spiritual working on many levels, have access to mysteries Elders don't have, are welcomed into both men's and women's circles in many cases, and do relationship/sex magic with other Gatekeepers. As all orientation and sexual behavior among the Dagara is considered both sacred and no ones business to ever talk about, having anyone confirm if Gatekeepers are not what the West considers "heterosexual" has not been possible, only postulated.
The book has some good material on relationship rituals that I appreciated, lots of stuff to chew on about the place of tribe in community and vice versa too... so important to keep in mind in passionate communities and other tribes of the heart. As much as a relationship is about the people in it, it is also about those around it, that they are interwoven in ways the "us vs them" relationship approach might say isn't worth worrying about.
In short, good small book, glad I read it. - I just finished this read and wow, I am blown away. I feel as if I now see relationships with everyone around me in different eyes and have a clearer method of dealing with my own inner-self. This book is not at all how I expected it to be- a well organized method for discovering intimacy with step-by-step instructions. Instead, it is thought provoking and leads you to question yourself. Thank you Some' ! I will purchase all of her readings after being introduced to her through this book.

- My fiancé and I have what we call â€Å“a book club.†We read the same book and discuss each chapter as we go along and this was a great read! RIP Sobonfu.
- This book is small, but packed with knowledge that requires an open heart to receive. It began my openness to the closeness of others and view the world in terms of relationships from a different lens. It is a soul tie and the book offers understanding though briefly discussed at times, but it leads everything regarding, life and love to your relationship with spirit. Once one acknowledges this everything else will flourish.
- Expressions of empathy, compassion and loving kindness have yet to be so simply and eloquently imparted in any language. The tool for inward focus on the spiritual aspect of our lives is viewed as an afterthought or even inconsequential in the West. But Sobonfu counters this consciousness with an indigenous one which gives relevance to unanswered mysteries and unattended ancestral spirits. A WONDERFUL read if you're asking the right questions.
- This book is awesome. Read it cover to cover in two days and feel that it has changed my fundamental beliefs about relationships and marriages. Absolutely loved it. Bought two more copies for my family and even read some to my husband.
- I recommendation this book for any body of African to take a look at long-term
serious committed relationships from an African perspective, not western concept on marriage.
I truly love this book and wish to apply some of the practices in this book in my life.
I do not have an African village in North America but am graceful for the knowledge this book has provided for me.
Thank you,
